Why So Slutty?

iMessages Between Friends

“I bought this outfit today to make myself feel ‘slutty-better’…”

[Shows Photo]

“Damn girllll!”

“Slutty does make us feel better, why is that?”

“Because it’s instant attention gratification.”

I wonder if this is true, or maybe just for my particular group of friends. We are somehow taught that in order to deal with whatever heartaches and loneliness we feel, we must be Beyonce. We must be fierce. We must be sexy. We must tell him: “To the left, to the left - everything you own in the box to the left.” There is no time for this mess of self loathing. We must feel hot and powerful, and somehow this hot and powerful translates to slutty. I don’t really get it either, but there it is. And with it comes a lot of love/hate. Is it demeaning to us? Or is it empowerment?

We say “eww” to the leering eyes, have low self-esteem when those same eyes aren’t grazing us, and we bask in the instant attention we are given. There are the moments when we certainly don’t want the attention, and other times when we command it. This being a chick thing is serious business.

I told myself that perhaps this year, I should start attempting to dress a little less slutty, a little more sultry/”More is less”. Yet today, my eyes gravitated towards the leopard print hot pants, gray lace bralette, and denim studded vest w/a sheer train. Where am I going to wear this? Certainly not Coachella, it will be ruined. Not outside on a work day. Do I even go to parties anymore? Still - I bought it… because I knew I looked hot in it and it made me feel better about my lonely day (not the fault of Valentines Day, mind you… it was just a really lonely day where none of my friends were free).

And so back to the question: why does slutty make us feel better? Why does being temporarily hot (cause Lord knows we have our moments… oh good God do we) matter? Why is calling it “slutty” more appealing to us than simply saying “hot” or “sexy”? I guess really what it comes down to is that we do want a little attention, otherwise we feel like we’re just another face. It’s just too bad we think that the best way to achieve that attention is through “looking slutty.” Maybe we should just rephrase it all together, because deep down my friends and I do like dressing up - for a man or ourselves (or other women). We don’t actually view ourselves as sluts (at least I don’t). Just the thought of dressing sexy and calling the look “slutty” makes it that much more lusty.

I’m bracing myself for varying feminist opinions.

[EDIT: The photo mentioned in the iMessages as well as the outfit I described is NOT the photo pictured, I’m saving that outfit for another day]

On New Years Day, my cousin and I decided to go for a stroll through Old Town and Balboa Park (but of course brunch and mimosas were first). The result of this outing were several cheesy, touristy photos. I shall now take this opportunity to use one of the photos from Old Town (Heritage Park to be exact, where the Victorian homes are) and do an outfit post (aka excuse to be vain - apologies for lack of detail - but you can click through the image for larger res). Happy 2013!
Knitted Newsboy Cap: Ripcurl
Cape Jacket: Love Tree
Jeggings: market find in the Philippines [Edit] Yes they are stripped :)
Purse: some off-brand thing I found at the Everything Under $10 store
Combat Boots: my trusty ‘ol Bakers!

It has been quite awhile since I have done a proper blog post, let alone an actual outfit post. Since it feels like a new year has begun (because the world soooo did not end) I have decided to post my outfit of choice for today… er yesterday.
Please excuse my low quality photo and just let me be vain.
I actually really love this outfit. I wore this to run errands, with the knowledge that I would have to be at a Yelp Elite Party later w/my friend Jen. I wanted to be comfortable yet festive… but my main objective was to keep warm! I don’t own too many winter pieces, as I am from Southern California, so I have to layer with what I have. I kept it “dressy” (for lack of better words) w/my sequined angora Mickey sweater and funky floral tights.

This just needs to be shared w/everyone. I love this so much.

A journalist and social media guru, Eileen Doñiego de France, is my very first model for this blog. With her busy schedule, the key to her outfits are easy to transition from day to night.

I absolutely love this outfit she put together. So casual, yet playful with the metallic blue, and mesh combination.

Stay tuned for more of her outfits, this week! Also, special thanks to Josh Yu, for his amazing photography. Check out his stuff here.

Earlier this month I was approached by Twisted-Threads to be featured on their blog! Of course I said yes, any excuse for an LA trip… any excuse to be vain! I chose this look because I wanted to show off what I would typically wear when I know I am going to a show or going to a club later. What I find amusing is that I actually wore this outfit this past weekend too (I went to see Fred Falke at El Dorado, yes totes amaze!), so I truly do choose outfits I can transition from day to night. And yes, I would wear this in the day - I mean when do you think these photos were taken?

AlunaGeorge - Your Drums, Your Love

lehotshit:

We previously posted the audio clip for the delightful “Your Drums, Your Love” from UK duo AlunaGeorge. Today, we have a video to compliment the song; Henry Scholfield directed it. The two are currently putting the finishing touches to their yet-to-be-titled debut album.

UNF! I LOVE AlunaGeorge! Finally I have something new to listen from her, and finally a new video! She’s like chillwave, some post dubstep (I really hate that term but whatevs), mashed w/90s R&B and I love it so much. Basically… trip-hop. I’m glad it’s making a come back. I also really dig her fashion style. I love how effortless she looks - not a lot of people can pull of minimalism. She can.

If there were one person I wish I could have seen in NYC while I was there, I wish I could have spotted Bill Cunningham. Catching him while snapping photos of fashion forward, style savvy, and interesting people would have been amazing. And actually being photographed by him would have been a DREAM (if only…)!

Thursday nights are often the big party nights in SD, and instead of going out, I opted to stay home. While I attempt to finish my to-do list of work, I will have “Bill Cunningham New York” running in the background. It is one of my fave documentaries and just inspires me artistically. Lord knows I focus a little bit too much on business these days.

Ah, Bill Cunningham, such a sweet and talented man.

Sometimes I do shoots, and I get all emo because I don’t know how to model properly! But I hearts my friends w/cameras anyway. LOL I’m pretty sure this was a test shot - but I like my lil booty shown’. I would like to see the rest of the shots BTW.
